When we eat, it's usually for one of two reasons. We're eating for nutrition - fuel - to keep us energized throughout the day, or we are eating for pleasure. Social gatherings, dinner with friends, or just a sit-on-the-couch-with-a-pint-of-ice-cream night. Eating (and drinking) can feel good and assuage emotions. The foods we crave when emotional eating are specifically constructed for this purpose: to activate different receptors in the brain and set us up to want them again and again.
The mantra this week is to ask yourself every time you make a food choice: fuel or feelings? If your answer isn't fuel, further ask why you want to eat it. If your answer is for pleasure and you must have something at that moment, try to make the healthiest choice available. Vegetables, lean protein, and grains are all filling and pack a nutritional punch!
